What Is It?

The Better Business Challenge is a friendly points-based competition aimed at helping your business achieve greater efficiency and sustainability.

A friendly competition…
Based on smart investments…
That yields powerful results.

View Our Mission

Small and big companies alike agree that incorporating sustainability into their core business model and operations is a better, smarter way of doing business. Why? Because it helps them become more competitive in the marketplace, and it has a positive impact on our local community.

It’s that “triple bottom line” of profits, people and the planet that companies all around the country are embracing at rapid speed with staggering results. Smarter choices about what types of products and services we purchase and how we use and reuse materials have led to more streamlined and efficient operations. Energy and water efficiency initiatives have slashed utility bills. Transportation improvements are helping businesses absorb the shock of high fuel costs.

Now it’s your turn. Whether you’ve long been a savvy player in the green business game or are just warming up, the Better Business Challenge is your entry point to learn innovative ways to incorporate more efficient and sustainable practices, set and achieve goals tailored to your business needs, and gain recognition for these efforts.

Ready. Set. Go.

The Better Business Challenge is a friendly competition among businesses to incorporate sustainable practices in their day-to-day operations. At the heart of the challenge is a points-based scorecard, structured to help businesses with the following:

• Take stock of their baseline and performance in six key areas (“Ready”)
• Set goals for improvements and benchmarks for success (“Set”)
• Take credit for those efforts and achievements as they are implemented (“Go”).

Every participating business will be empowered with the resources needed to compete, including: an extensive resource list, online benchmarking tools, case studies, site visits, training sessions, webinars, and avenues for networking and collaboration.

The Playing Field

Businesses will have the opportunity to advance their sustainability and score points in these sectors:
Energy, Water, Transportation, Waste, Purchasing, Leadership/Innovation

Make the Highlight Reel

There will be plenty of opportunities for public recognition along the way through media partnerships, advertising, and cross-promotion. Businesses that have already taken strides on the sustainability front or have unique perspectives to share will be invited to speak at Challenge trainings and networking events. All businesses who participate will be recognized and a review team of area leaders will award the top scorers in small, medium, and large businesses, as well as “biggest loser,” top innovator, runners up, and green champion. At the conclusion of the Challenge we will host an awards ceremony where the winners will be honored.
