One Fast Fact:
We purchase Renewable Energy Credits in order to reduce our indirect electricity emissions. In 2013, we purchased 32,805 kW-hr’s worth of REC’s to reduce our yearly carbon emission to zero. We plan on continuing to purchase enough REC’s each year through our electricity provider, Dominion Power, to reduce our annual net carbon emissions from electricity to zero. 1 MWh of renewable energy, equal to a single REC, purchased through Dominion’s Green Power program prevents
18,828 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions.

1-Summary: We looked at a number of different ways in which we could help reduce our yearly carbon emissions, due to our heavy use of powered equipment in our manufacturing process (CNC, computers, heat presses…). We decided to sign up with our local energy providers Renewable Energy Credit program, which allows us to purchase enough REC’s to completely offset our annual carbon emissions to zero.

2-Initial Goals: Our initial goal was to somehow reduce our annual carbon emissions as close to zero as possible, without having any negative effects (delays) in our manufacturing process.

3-Key Results: By purchasing the REC’s through our local energy provider each month, we’ve been able to completely offset our carbon emissions.

4-Next Steps: We plan on continuing to purchase REC’s and have begun focusing on more specific ways to reduce our energy usage (turning the power off to our large machines over the weekend to avoid any parasitic drain).
